What is UL 62368-1:2019?

UL 62368-1:2019 is a safety standard specifically for audio, video, and information technology equipment. It provides guidelines and requirements for manufacturers to ensure that their products meet certain safety standards. This standard was developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent global safety science company.

The Purpose of UL 62368-1:2019

The purpose of UL 62368-1:2019 is to address the changing landscape of technology and to promote safety in the design and manufacturing of electrical equipment. With the rapid development of new technologies, traditional safety standards were no longer sufficient to ensure the safety of modern electronic products. UL 62368-1:2019 aims to bridge this gap by providing up-to-date guidelines that cover both traditional and emerging technologies.

Key Requirements of UL 62368-1:2019

UL 62368-1:2019 outlines various requirements that manufacturers must comply with to achieve compliance. These requirements include:

Risk Assessments: Manufacturers are required to conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with their products.

Energy Sources: The standard addresses energy sources such as electrical, thermal, optical, and chemical, aiming to prevent hazards originating from these sources.

Structural Integrity: Equipment must be designed and manufactured to withstand mechanical and environmental stresses, ensuring the safety of users and minimizing the risk of accidents.

Fire Protection: UL 62368-1:2019 incorporates fire hazard criteria to minimize the risk of fires caused by electrical and thermal elements in electronic products.

Clear Instructions: Manufacturers are required to provide clear and concise instructions for proper use, installation, and maintenance of their equipment. This helps users understand potential risks and operate the products safely.

Transition from UL 60950-1 & UL 60065

UL 62368-1:2019 serves as a replacement for UL 60950-1 and UL 60065, which were previously separate standards for IT and audiovisual equipment respectively. The new standard consolidates these two categories and integrates them into one comprehensive safety standard. Manufacturers who previously complied with UL 60950-1 and UL 60065 will need to transition to UL 62368-1:2019 to maintain compliance and ensure the safety of their products.
