What is the difference between IEC 61869-2 and IEC 60044-1?

In the field of electrical engineering, there are various international standards that govern the design, performance, and testing of instrument transformers. Two such standards are IEC 61869-2 and IEC 60044-1. Although both standards cover similar aspects, there exist some crucial differences between them.

Scope and Application

IEC 61869-2 primarily focuses on current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) used in power systems. It provides detailed specifications for their design, characteristics, and performance. On the other hand, IEC 60044-1 deals specifically with CTs, outlining their construction, accuracy, and testing methods. While both standards target CTs, IEC 60044-1 is more specific in terms of its scope and application.

Accuracy Classes

Another significant difference lies in the accuracy classes defined by each standard. IEC 61869-2 introduces a broader range of accuracy classes for both CTs and VTs. This allows for more flexibility in selecting an appropriate accuracy class based on specific system requirements. In contrast, IEC 60044-1 offers a more limited number of accuracy classes, focusing mainly on high-accuracy applications such as protection relays and revenue metering.

Technical Requirements

When it comes to technical requirements, IEC 61869-2 includes more comprehensive provisions compared to IEC 60044-1. It covers a wide range of topics, including temperature limits, frequency response, insulation levels, and electromagnetic compatibility. IEC 60044-1, however, provides a concise set of technical requirements focused specifically on CTs. It doesn't delve deeply into other aspects such as VTs or electromagnetic compatibility.

In conclusion, while both IEC 61869-2 and IEC 60044-1 are important international standards governing instrument transformers, there are notable differences between them in terms of scope, accuracy classes, and technical requirements. Engineers and professionals working in the electrical industry need to be aware of these distinctions to ensure compliance with the appropriate standard for their specific applications.
