What are the two types of hybrid electric vehicles?

As people become more concerned about environmental sustainability and rising fuel prices, the demand for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has been steadily increasing. HEVs combine the benefits of a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric motor to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles

One type of hybrid electric vehicle is the parallel hybrid. In this configuration, both the electric motor and the internal combustion engine work together to power the vehicle. The electric motor assists the engine during acceleration and uphill climbs, reducing the load on the engine and improving overall fuel efficiency. During deceleration and braking, the motor acts as a generator, capturing kinetic energy and converting it into electricity to charge the battery. This energy is then used during low-speed driving or when the vehicle is idling, eliminating the need for the engine to constantly run. Examples of parallel hybrid electric vehicles include the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

Series Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The other type of hybrid electric vehicle is the series hybrid. Unlike parallel hybrids, series hybrids rely primarily on the electric motor to power the wheels, while the internal combustion engine acts as a generator to charge the battery. When the battery's charge is depleted, the engine automatically starts to generate electricity, allowing the vehicle to continue operating. This eliminates the need for external charging stations and provides extended range capabilities. Series hybrid electric vehicles are often referred to as range extenders due to their ability to travel longer distances solely on electric power. Notable examples of series hybrid electric vehicles include the Chevrolet Volt and BMW i3 with Range Extender.
