What is EN 50247?

The EN 50247 is a technical regulation standard that sets out the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of industrial equipment in relation to voltage fluctuation and flicker. It provides guidelines and limits on electrical power quality, aiming to protect both the equipment and the electricity network.

Understanding the Technical Requirements

EN 50247 outlines specific criteria for assessing voltage fluctuations and flicker caused by industrial equipment. Voltage fluctuations occur when there are sudden changes in voltage levels, while flicker refers to visible variations in light intensity caused by the voltage fluctuations. Both can be detrimental to sensitive equipment and disrupt the stability of the power supply system.

To comply with this standard, manufacturers must ensure that their equipment does not exceed the allowable limits set for voltage fluctuations and flicker. This involves conducting thorough testing and measurements to assess the equipment's performance under various operating conditions.

Implications and Benefits of Compliance

Compliance with EN 50247 is crucial for manufacturers of industrial equipment to ensure that their products meet the required levels of electromagnetic compatibility. Failing to comply can lead to costly consequences, such as equipment malfunctions, production downtime, and potential damage to the power grid infrastructure.

On the other hand, complying with EN 50247 brings several benefits. Firstly, it ensures the proper functioning of industrial equipment, leading to increased reliability and reduced risk of failures or breakdowns. Secondly, it helps maintain the stability of the electricity network, preventing disturbances that could affect other connected devices or cause power outages. Lastly, compliance builds trust and credibility with customers, demonstrating a commitment to quality and safety standards.

Testing and Certification Process

The process of verifying compliance with EN 50247 involves testing the equipment in certified laboratories. These tests assess the equipment's susceptibility to voltage fluctuations, flicker generation, and its impact on other devices connected to the same power supply. Testing typically includes measuring voltage changes, assessing lighting variations, and evaluating the equipment's performance under different load conditions.

If the equipment meets the established requirements, the manufacturer is issued a certification for compliance with EN 50247. This certificate serves as proof that the equipment has undergone rigorous testing and complies with the regulations, ensuring its compatibility with the electricity network and other connected devices.
